How We Can Help
The African EleFund plans on using all proceeds gained through donations and through our collaboration with Starbucks to provide the training and proper equipment of our 300+ park rangers and to establish a wildlife sanctuary for African elephants. Our sanctuary, which will be called the Galana Elephant Sanctuary, will be located in a strip of forest along the Galana River; this strip is directly west to the Tsavo East National Park, one of the oldest and largest conservation parks in Kenya, but does not fall within the park's boundaries.
Furthermore,
with every Kenya Cold Cup Tumbler (24 fl oz) sold for $14.95, 50% of
the earnings will also go to the fund. The plastic, double-walled cup
includes an intricate design similar to the design on the Starbucks®
Kenya coffee package. Each purchased cup gives $7.47 to our cause!
The Necessary Funds
In order to save these animals, we will need to fund for the training and equipping of park rangers and to fund for the sanctuary itself.
Land:
The total land area of our Galana Elephant Sanctuary is approximately 362.12 hectares (or about 3,621,157 square miles). With a cost of $578.03 per hectare (a price we calculated based off the $4 million spent by the African Wildlife Foundation and The Nature Conservancy to purchase 6,920 hectares), the total cost of purchasing our land will be around $209,316.
Transportation:
We will need aircrafts to transport our rangers and their equipment around the sanctuary. Since we plan to purchase three Piper Cub airplanes ($150,000 each), the total price for our aircrafts will be a total of $450,000. We plan to hire five professional pilots who each will require a salary of $50,000 per year; the cost of payment for our pilots will be $250,000. For a 7 hour flight (525 miles) it would cost about $625 for a drum of gas. We plan to have our pilots survey the park each day for 365 days a year; the total price for airplane fuel would be $684,375 a year.
Vehicles will be required to transport our rangers across terrain. We will require ten 2014 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks, with each at a price of $18,125. This calls for a total of $181,250 in terrain vehicle purchases.
Rangers:
We will employ 150 park rangers who will each be paid $20,908 annually. The total cost for payment of these rangers will be $3,136,200. The rangers will be responsible for constant monitoring of our elephants in order to combat poachers. They require equipment for everyday use such as a sleeping bag ($34.97), a tent ($29.97), a medical kit ($158 for a MooreBrand® Rescue Response Kit), a rain jacket ($41.76), tools such as knives/torches ($10.57 for a survival knife set), a pair of hiking boots ($39.66), binoculars ($51.95), and a small backpack ($14.97). Furthermore, each ranger will be equipped with camouflaged uniforms ($25.99 for pants and $21.99 for the shirt) and long and medium range firearms ($1,075.53 for an assault rifle). The total cost of equipping our 150 park rangers with these materials will be $225,804.
Electric Fence:
The fencing cost per mile (including the cost of steel T-posts, insulators for each post, strands of electric wire, and gates) is $1,876. The total fencing cost for our Galana Elephant Sanctuary, with a perimeter of 6.09 miles, will be $11,424.84. We will have our park rangers assigned at each post for surveillance. They will keep an eye out for intruding poachers as well as ensure the safety of our elephants (from getting harmed by the electric fences themselves).
Facilities:
We will build 2 large African elephant barns at the northern and southern ends of our sanctuary. The barns will consist of concrete floors, hydronic floor heat, translucent walls, a metal ceiling, metal framing, the essentials of plumbing and electricity, as well as a hoist-and-crane system installed on the ceiling (used to lift injured elephants that cannot manage to stand on their feet). One facility will take a up a space of 300 acres of land. One building itself, including the electrical and plumbing needs, will cost a total of $1,800,000. This cost will also include a fenced-in area located in the back of the facility. We will use these barns to house and feed injured elephants whenever they require attention or are near death after encounters with poachers. The total cost for both barns will be $3,600,000.
